Ambassador Award

The Ambassador of Kansas Surgery & Recovery Center is awarded bi-annually to the employee who promotes teamwork and a positive attitude to build a better, more enjoyable workplace. This employee, through their everyday workings exceeds the expectations in dealing with co-workers, patients, families, and physicians. Sheila Okla is the winner for the last part of 2021. Sheila started at KSRC in September of 2019. She had just moved back to Wichita from Colorado where she had lived for the past13 years. She has been a CNA for 30 years and is currently a CNA in the Inpatient section of the hospital. During her time away, she enjoys being a Grandma to her two grandsons, hanging out with friends and traveling to distant places on her bucket list. She says what she enjoys the most about working here is her patients. Her goal is to treat each patient the same as she would like to be treated.

Pando Initiative

KSRC employees team together to assist the Pando Initiative

As PandoKids are facing uncertainty and additional stressors related to changes in how they are learning, Pando supporters are helping us to connect with and inspire students. One way that students can express themselves is through art. Art has the ability to encourage creativity, improve motor skills, concentration, as well as supporting their emotional wellbeing by reducing anxiety, and helping to build confidence especially if they are struggling with learning disabilities, or social issues.

Our friends at Kansas Surgery and Recovery Center recognize these benefits and recently mobilized to collect items and assemble 100 art kits for our elementary students. Each kit contains colored pencils, markers, crayons, paints, a pair of headphones and so much more!

Kansas Surgery and Recovery has not only supported Pando through donating art kits, they have provided hygiene kits for students and “home visit kits” which are baskets filled with basic necessities for the families that we have the opportunity to work with. In addition to this, they have been a continued supporter of our largest fundraiser, 100 Men Who Cook. With this year’s event being moved to a virtual format, their support was more crucial than ever.

We are so grateful to have relationships with community leaders that believe in our mission and are continually supporting the kids we serve.

Jerry is committed to the YMCA Bowl-a-Thon

Over the past 7 years (8 Bowl-a-Thons total) Jerry has continued to engage the employees, Leadership team, and Kansas Surgery and Recovery vendors in the YMCA’s Bowl a Thon. He willingly takes on the responsibility to recruit numerous teams each year and those teams always go well above and beyond the $600 team goal. He believes in the YMCA mission and impact and conveys that to the employees, resulting in their continued engagement in the event and Y.

In multiple years, Jerry has not been able to personally participate in the event due to vacations, major family life event (birth of twin daughters) or other activities, yet he willingly leads the charge to recruit teams and collect donations regardless. The continued involvement of Kansas Surgery and Recovery Center in the bowl-a-thon has played a large role in the Community Development Branch meeting our Bowl-a-Thon event goals.

KSRC begins a 10,000 square foot expansion in January of 2016. This expansion will include two new operating rooms, enhanced sterile processing and much needed storage. The project should be completed by September of 2016.

May Is Arthritis Awareness Month

According to the Arthritis Foundation, arthritis causes more disability in the United States than any other disease, illness, or injury. With one out of every five adults affected, as well as more than 300,000 children, the month of May has been declared National Arthritis Awareness Month to bring attention to this debilitating condition.

What is Arthritis?

Arthritis is a general term for joint disease or pain, and it encompasses more than 100 different conditions. Although anyone can have arthritis, it’s seen most often in women and aging adults. Juvenile Arthritis affects children of all ages.

The most common form is Osteoarthritis, which is a degenerative type that can develop when cartilage wears down, causing joint pain, stiffness, and swelling. The risk factors are injuries, excess weight, age, and family history.

Inflammatory Arthritis, such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, can develop when a person’s immune system generates too much inflammation, possibly as a result of environmental and genetic factors. Joint inflammation can also be triggered by infections, food poisoning, or STDs. Although these types of Infectious Arthritis can often be cleared by antibiotics, some cases lead to chronic arthritis.

Metabolic Arthritis is caused by an excess of uric acid crystals in the joints, which can occur with Gout. Uric acid is a natural by-product of our bodies breaking down purines in our food and cells, but too much of it can cause sudden joint pain.

Typical Symptoms

The effects of arthritis can range from mild to severe, and they can get progressively worse, stay the same, or even come and go. Symptoms can include joint pain, swelling, stiffness, and reduced range of motion. Severe cases can lead to chronic pain and the inability to perform activities of daily living, such as writing, getting dressed, and even walking or climbing stairs.

Treatments

There are many treatments available for arthritis, depending on the severity. Staying physically active and at a healthy weight can help maintain a person’s mobility and joint function. In some cases, physical therapy, medications and/or joint replacement surgery may be required.

Get Involved

During National Arthritis Awareness Month, the Arthritis Foundation aims to encourage people to learn more about the effects of joint diseases. Their Walk to Cure Arthritis encourages participants to be physically active while also raising money to support arthritis advocacy and research.
